Mumbai University semester exams may clash with Diwali vacations
The University of Mumbai’s schedule for the next semester exams could clash with the Diwali vacations. According to a circular issued by university, the exams will commence on October 25. The main Diwali festivities will be held on October 30 and 31.
College principals, teachers and students have criticized the university. “During Diwali vacations, it is not only difficult for students to focus on studies, even colleges have a tough time convincing the staff to work. It looks like it’ll be another year where we’ll have to work through our Diwali break,” said the principal of a college in Kandivli.
“It’s surprising how the university puts together dates for exams without considering the yearly academic schedule designed by them,” he added.
This is not the first time that students and colleges are looking at giving up on Diwali vacations for exams.
In October 2013, the university teacher’s union had raised objection to the university’s decision to hold board examinations during the Diwali holidays. College principals had also met the varsity’s then vice-chancellor and controller of examination to straighten out the issues.
While on the one hand colleges are worried about losing out on holidays, there are concerns that there will be not enough examiners and moderators during Diwali vacations to assess the papers. “Earlier, the exam schedule was prepared ensuring that assessment of exam papers starts before Diwali holidays so that the results are not delayed. Having exams during the vacations will also push the assessment process ahead by a few days,” said the principal of another college.
Deepak Wasave, controller of examination, Mumbai university, said the exam dates are “tentative”. “Before the final schedule is announced, all these issues will be considered. Teachers and students need not worry,” he said.
